An Attitude Check at Christmas 2014!

Philippians 2:5-7

5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

I have often used this phrase in ministry – Christianity boils down to attitude.  I have often added the following phrase – Christianity boils down to attitude – the position and condition of our heart.  Someone once gave me a hat and a desk marker with this phrase on it.  I been known to say the phrase Christianity boils down to and the congregation would respond attitude.

As Christmas approaches I wanted us to do an attitude check.  I recently talked to someone that made the mistake of going to the mall to Christmas shop (I actually went there myself to run some errands for my wife for Christmas).  In addition to that conversation I saw a friend post on Facebook the following – Next year – when I am stupid again – and think it is a good idea to go to the mall for Christmas shopping…. (He inserted his wife’s name here) – please remind me that online shopping is the new rule – always.

Readers – have any of us been caught up in the commercialism of Christmas?  Have the commercials on TV gotten us revved up to keep up with the folks down the street?  Have our children made their wish lists known as they see more and more commercials?  I remember going through the Sears Christmas Catalog as a child marking the things I wanted for Christmas.

Christmas is NOT about how many things we can get or give.  Gifts are to represent the Greatest Gift Ever Given – Jesus Christ or at the very least – the gifts that folks brought to Jesus on His Birthday!  They are symbolic!  They are not the reason for the season!  Jesus is the reason for the season!

So – I hope this jolts us back to reality.  Christmas isn’t going to be ruined if they ran out of the gift you wanted to get or give.  Christmas is about our attitude – focused on Jesus – focused on His birth – focused on His love for us!  Love came down at Christmas time!  Check your attitude!  Is our attitude right this Christmas?

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
