Our Appearance During the Fast

Matthew 6:16

When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

Pic of Ray 11302014I have recently challenged the congregation I serve – First United Methodist Church of Laurel – to a 21-Day Prayer/Fast. Here is the information that was sent them by the office. If you would like to join us – please respond to me and we will welcome you for sure!

Info sent to the congregation this week:

January 5 – January 25 our pastor has called us to a time of prayer and fasting as we seek God’s will for our lives, our families, and our church. The following materials are being recommended for all to read/view during the prayer/fast.

  • Right Now Media – you must login using a link from the church. Send an email to RevRay@fumcl.org and Rev. Ray will hook you up. There is a teaching on Prayer by Matt Chandler on Rev. Ray’s suggested material to view. There is an app for your iPhone or iPad to take the lessons with you (no Android yet).
  • Rev. Ray’s blog page – you can visit www.raymcdonald.wordpress.comevery day or you can register your e-mail with the site and receive the posts through your e-mail.
  • Daily readings on www.youversion.com– sign up for the 21-Day Fast reading plan. They have mobile apps for all formats.
  • Sermons in January will also have materials for the prayer/fast.

Rev. Ray would love to hear/read testimonies from your experience during the 21-Day Prayer/Fast.

Today’s passage is a reminder that when we fast we should not change our outward appearance or even our attitude. Matthew 6:16 – When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. While we are fasting and praying – we should not reveal that we are fasting by our appearance or our attitude. We should improve our appearance and attitude it possible. Be thinking about this please – it is very important.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
