21-Day Prayer/Fast – Day 3

Daniel 1:8

But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.

01032015 RayWhat are we willing to do to please God?  Sunday’s message will be titled Our Plans – Are They Pleasing to God?  I know that might not be your basic question – but it is a real question I think we should wrestle with today and even daily.  What are we willing to do to please God?

Daniel and his friends were in a tough place – a life or death place.  They were God-fearing young men who wanted to please God – yet they were captured by a foreign nation and placed in their service.  They experienced favor and were in a very good situation – as far as being a captive was concerned.  Yet things don’t always stay the same.

The king gave them the best – because they were the best of the captives – young men that God was honoring.  Daniel 1:5 – The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king’s table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king’s service.

But Daniel and the others decided that they wanted to please God more than anything.  They were willing to displease the king – and possibly be tortured or even killed doing so.  What amazing faith they showed in their God.

21 day prayer fastDaniel 1:8-10 – 8 But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. 9 Now God had caused the official to show favor and sympathy to Daniel, 10 but the official told Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.”

Daniel and his friends were all about pleasing God so they asked the chief official to test them and see if they didn’t remain strong – by fasting from the kings food and only eating what pleased God.  Daniel 1:11-14 – 11 Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 12 “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.” 14 So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.

What are we willing to do to please God?  Will we fast for 10 days – or 21 days – for a day to please God?  During our fast we will have many opportunities to deviate from our commitment to pray and fast.  What will win out?  Will our desire to please God and to be drawn deeper into His presence win out or our desires to please self?  The entire reading for today is found at Daniel 1:1-21.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
