21-Day Prayer/Fast – Day 5

Matthew 6:5

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

Many fasts in the Bible were corporate fasts called by authority figures for a whole group to participate in together. If we were to read today’s full passage (Matthew 6:5-18) we might better understand that attitude is everything when we fast.  Jesus is teaching us that fasting is not about us but rather about our relationship with God.  It isn’t to bring attention to us but rather it is to be pointed toward God!

I once coined a phrase – Christianity boils down to attitude!  I would normally complete that phrase as follows – Christianity boils down to attitude – the condition and position of one’s heart – and it fits here.  Fasting is about our attitude – it is not about bragging rights or some more spiritual than thou achievement.  It is about humbling ourselves before God as we seek His face and desire His grace.  It boils down to our relationship with Jesus!  So here is a great question – How’s your relationship with Jesus?  Are we growing closer to Jesus as we walk out this prayer/fast?  What are we doing to put ourselves into a better place to see Jesus in our lives?

We should check our attitude today my friends/dear readers.  We should ask ourselves – why are we fasting?  If we believe the answer has anything to do with bringing some sort of praise or honor to us – we should drop out of the fast right away – or at least change our prayers to humble me Lord as I strive to get my heart in the right place through this time of prayer and fasting.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
