In God’s Image

Genesis 1:27

So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

IMG_0301My children look a lot like their mother (thank God). There might be a smidge of me in them – but I am so glad they look more like their mom than me (so is everyone else – especially the fellows in their lives – their mom is a knockout).

Looks are one thing – but the way they behave – is a product of the two of us for sure. Some of our daughters have my financial sense – some have their mom’s taste for all things and carry themselves with such dignity like their mom. Some are super competitive (I wonder where they got that trait?).  All have a deep faith in Jesus. Each loves to be around family – one even married a pastor (the acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree).

As I watch my grandchildren grow (our 4th one is due any day) – I am already seeing some of us in them too. They are becoming a product of their environment for sure. They will grow with our morals and values taught to them and at some point they will accept most of them (I hope) and they will probably reject some (I imagine).  We are a close family and we will all have an impact on them – biologically and environmentally.

When God created humanity – He created us in His image. His image wasn’t male or female – gender was God’s created order – created so that we would be drawn to the opposite gender and for some of us – to procreate (being fruitful and multiplying). The image of God is spirit – and each of us has a spirit – to connect with God’s Spirit. John 4:24 – God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.

Let’s look at today’s passage in partial context. Genesis 1:27-31 – 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

If we are created in the image of God – we have a spirit too (as seen in John’s record above). (I have a question from one of our Sunday School classes to answer about the difference between soul and spirit – but that is another subject.) We are called to connect our spirit with the Spirit of God. We can have a deep relationship with God – Spirit to spirit. That is what we should strive for as we walk out our daily spiritual journey.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
