One Who Serves

Luke 22:27

I am among you as one who serves.

IMG_0301Would you rather serve or be served? Some would really rather serve than be served – some would rather be served. I know people who serve others all the time – and yet they have a hard time allowing others to serve them when they have a need. I imagine there are those who don’t have a preference for serving or being served.

As Christians – we are called to serve others – to even think of others above ourselves – to love others like Christ loves us. John 13:34-35 – 34 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

The call for Christians is to serve others – to follow the example set by our Lord – Jesus – who came not to be served – but rather to serve others. Mark 10:45 – For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

FUMCLNightIf we are followers of Christ – we must have a heart to serve. It seems like the church needs to learn this truth. In most churches it seems like 20% of the people who attend the church do 80% of the work. Rather than all sharing in the joy of serving – in the task at hand – it seems like few do most of the serving – the work. Instead of all following the example of Christ in serving – it seems like some serve and some simply attend.

When the Trustees call a workday at your church – how many show up? When the Evangelism team goes out visiting the community – how many show up? When the pastor challenges the whole church to support a missional outreach – how many participate? When the church asks for help in any ministry – is it the same people who step up?

Jesus set the example for us dear readers – Luke 22:27 – For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. Jesus came to serve – rather than be served. Jesus set the example – one that we should all follow.

Jesus said – John 12:26 – Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.

Are we servants of the Most High? Are we serving His people? Are we looking for ways to serve?  Do we wait to be asked or do we show up and serve?  Are there things beneath us?  Are we ready – willing – and able to give our best to the Master?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
