The Day of Evil

Ephesians 6:13

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

IMG_0301There are a number of theological or religious concepts that are debatable.  Like how much water should be used for baptism?  In the United Methodist Church we celebrate baptism by sprinkling, pouring or immersion.  We believe the amount of water is not as important as the transformed heart for Jesus.  I’m sure there are many other debatable concepts.

One concept that doesn’t seem debatable to me is that the evil one – Satan – is real and intends us no good.  Peter puts it this way:  1 Peter 5:8 – Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

We’ve referred to the story of Job in several sermons and here is a verse from that story – talking about Satan roaming the earth: Job 2:2 – And the Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it.”

For those of us who believe the Bible to be truthful – there is an evil one – a devil named Satan.  This is not a debatable subject.  The truth of the Bible tells us that the devil is roaming the earth looking for someone to devour to attack and destroy.  Yet – God doesn’t leave us without protection.

We are told to resist the devil and he will flee: James 4:7 – Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Resisting the devil involves surrender to God!

We are warned that the world – the devil’s domain – will hate us if we follow Jesus: John 15:18 – If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. We are going to be attacked!  There is no question about this fact!

But we are not left defenseless.  We are told we can resist temptation – one of the devil’s tools: 1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

In today’s passage we are told that we can stand up to the devil.  In Ephesians 6 we are given a list of offensive and defensive weapons at our disposal.  We are given armor to defeat the attacks of the evil one: Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

To merely accept Jesus and walk each day without preparing for the battle seems foolish to me.  The passage says when the day of evil comes – not if it comes.  Are we prepared?  Do we prepare daily for the spiritual battle we face?  Even though the war has been won – the battle still rages each and every day!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
