Be Strong and Very Courageous

Joshua 1:7

“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.

IMG_0301I just finished playing some full-court basketball (we try to play a few mornings a week). I’m actually starting to feel better on the court. The 3-ball was dropping this morning and when they took that away I was able to drive to the basket a few times. I’m actually playing better defense too – which is an indication that I am feeling stronger. Twenty more pounds and look out!

Where in your life are you feeling stronger? Is there a place in your life where you feel strong and very courageous? Where you feel bold and ready to take on a task?

In today’s lesson we read words of God as He encourages Joshua to be strong and very courageous. Moses had passed and Joshua was being installed as God’s new man – new leader. God was giving Joshua instructions as Joshua’s book opens.

Here it is in partial context. Joshua 1:1–9 – 1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide: “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. 4 Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west. No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them. 7 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

As God calls Joshua to be strong and very courageous He also calls Joshua and us as well as we read God’s Word – to obey God’s teachings. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.

The promise – if we keep God’s Word – is that we will be prosperous and successful. If we seek after God – God will bless us.

It is not easy to obey God’s Word – especially in a society that turns their hearts away from God. Joshua was going into a land where they would turn against God – and Joshua and the people of God needed to be strong and very courageous to stand firm for God. We see Christians today in that same region dying for their faith in Christ – in a land where following God’s Word takes strength and courage.

What about where we live? Are we living by God’s Word with strength and courage? Or are we failing – under very little pressure? Are we walking the talk or simply talking a good game? As we walk through our faith journey – are we getting stronger?

As I shed more pounds and play more – my game is starting to come back. Our spiritual game can improve as well – if by faith we place our trust in God and His Word.  Be strong and very courageous and walk by faith!  Seek His face and desire His grace and see what God will do!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.

  1. I like that comforting stanza in a hymn “Though none go with me, still I will follow.” We may think we are alone, but we are not. If God is for us, who can be against us? If a church is the bride of a generation’s foolishness, that church will be a widow in the next. We have a “faith once delivered.”
