What Are We Facing?

2 Kings 6:16

“Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

IMG_0301What are we facing today? What challenges are before us? Some of my friends are starting new appointments today as pastors of United Methodist Churches. Two specifically start serving churches in Crofton and Annapolis. As they meet new people and Sunday preach and lead worship before a new congregation – I will be praying for them. May God richly bless them as they serve with all of their hearts a new people!

What are we facing today? What challenges are before us? Are our marriages having issues? Are the children facing tough times – are we facing tough times with the children? Is our job a trouble spot? Are relationships caving in around us? Is the news causing us pain? Do we have legal issues facing us?  Are we fighting a disease like our governor is facing?  Are we fighting an addiction?

What are we facing today? What challenges are before us? And my next question – what are we doing about these challenges? How are we facing them? Do we try to face them alone – on our own power and strength?

Next question – have we faced challenges that seemed insurmountable? A song from my youth went like this – Got any rivers you think are uncrossable, Got any mountains you can’t tunnel through, God specializes in things thought impossible, and He can do what no other one can do. I loved singing that song and the message for sure.

What are we facing today? What challenges are before us? Let’s look at today’s passage in partial context. His enemy surrounded Elisha on every turn. His servant thought things were lost. 2 Kings 6:15-17 – 15 When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked. 16 “Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17 And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

What are we facing today? What challenges are before us? Don’t face them alone. Call upon the Lord and He will help! This is one of my favorite passages – 1 Corinthians 1:25 – For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. When we exclude God – we are missing out on so much strength and wisdom. When we rely on ourselves – we are dealing with foolishness and weakness. Seek His face and desire His grace is one of my favorite sayings!

What are we facing today? What challenges are before us? Don’t be afraid . . . those who are with us are more than those who are with them.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
