Our Love For God

John 3:16

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

82015 RayOne of the all-time favorite passages is today’s passage – John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Watch any golf tournament and you might just see a sign that says John 3:16.

A sign of whom we love or what we love is what we are willing to give up for them or it. For instance – I asked my Tuesday morning Bible Study – who or what they loved. They responded with the normal list – children – pets – Jesus of course – and more. When asked what they would be willing to do for a pet with a major illness – some said – whatever it takes. Another said they would sell their house to help with the medical bills of a child.

We are willing to do whatever it takes for those we love or something we love. Some of us – for the sake of a few dollars – would camp out overnight at a store to assure that we were one of the first ones in the next day or overnight to get tickets to a movie or a concert. We’ll do some crazy things for something we love.

God loved His creation so much that He sent His Son. John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Jesus loved us so much – He died on the cross for our redemption – while we were yet His enemies. Romans 5:6–8 – You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

What about our love for Jesus? The Scriptures of filled with passages that describe how we should feel toward God!

Mark 12:30 – Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.

Matthew 16:24 – Then Jesus said to his disciples, Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

What are we willing to do for Jesus? What are we willing to do to express our love for Jesus? Are we willing to read the Bible daily? Are we willing to attend worship regularly? Are we willing to serve others? Are we willing to forgive others? Are we willing to tithe and even sacrificially give to carry on the work of our Lord through our local church? Are we willing to witness – telling others about Jesus? Are we willing to do whatever it takes to let our light shine? Matthew 5:16 – In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

If we deny God rather than self – we will be lost. Matthew 10:33 – But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven. Mark 8:38 – If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.

In order to follow Jesus – are we willing to deny self and take up our cross? Are we willing to do away with some earthly desires so that our spiritual lives will flourish? Are we willing to think more of the things of God rather than the things of this world?

How much do we love God? How well do we express our love for God? How well do we walk out our love for God?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
