Unless the Lord Builds the House

Psalm 127:1

Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.

82015 RayWe’re talking about ways to grow our church at FUMC – to draw others to Jesus – to deepen our faith. We’ve developed a Mission Statement – Bring – Build – Send. To flesh that out a little – we desire to bring people into environments where they can encounter Christ – build people up in their knowledge and understanding of Christ – and send people out to serve Christ. A sermon series is planned for October to present this more completely to the congregation.

The next phase for us is to ask the various ministries of our church how bring – build – send is walked out in their area of ministry and how we might help them do even more. We will develop plans and strategies – we will challenge people to step up and become part of God’s work. We will put everything on the table for consideration and strive to do things right for sure.

Here’s today passage – the entire Psalm – Psalm 127:1-5 – 1 Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves. 3 Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. 4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.

I want us to realize that we can have the best music – the best preaching – and the best plan for ministry – but if the Lord isn’t building the church – the builders build in vain. We ALWAYS need to keep our eyes on Jesus. As the author of Experiencing God – Henry Blackaby wrote – (paraphrased) – rather than do ministry and ask God to bless that ministry – look for where God is at work and join God.

As a church family – we should have our eyes open – looking for where God is at work and we should join God. Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
