Rejoicing in the Lord!

Philippians 4:4

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

82015 RayA song I use to love to sing – had a section of the song that went like this – Rejoice in the Lord, always, and again I say rejoice, rejoice in the Lord, always, and again I say rejoice.  Rejoice, rejoice, and again I say rejoice.  Rejoice, rejoice, and again I say rejoice. It can be sung in a round and we have several times at churches I have served.  It comes from today’s passage of Scripture.

Philippians 4:4 – Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

A saying I made up goes like this:  Happiness is circumstantially driven, while Joy is spiritually derived.  It is one of my favorite sayings.

Rejoicing for me is living in joy – re-joy-ing!  Like many people – there are circumstances in my life that don’t lineup with happiness.  Do you have them too?  Maybe for some the crash of the economy this month has hit hard.  Maybe some have health issues – a number of our members are having hip replacements – others have faced illness – while still others have passed away.  Some might be having issues with their children – their parents – their marriage. No matter what is going on in our life – good or bad – sometime or all the time – we can have joy in the Lord!  Joy can supersede the circumstances of our lives – no matter what.  Take a look at Philippians 4:4 again in context.

Philippians 4:4-7 – 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Verse 7 in two other versions of the Bible reads this way:

Philippians 4:7 – And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. KJV

Philippians 4:7 – Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life. The Message

Joy – a relationship with Jesus – brings peace – beyond understanding.  This joy – this peace – can carry us through tough seasons of life. Keep focused on Jesus – on our joy in the Lord – rather than on the circumstances of life.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
