Children – Obey Your Parents – As a Command

Ephesians 6:1-4

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” – which is the first commandment with a promise – 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

82015 RayFor the next few days we will try to unpack this important passage to families.  God gives loads of instructions to families in the Bible.  All we need do is read it – search it – and understand it.  There is instruction about marriage – about who should and who should not marry – about baptism – about discipline – about love and more.  Today we will begin a study of this passage about the family.

Today’s passage begins with verse one of chapter six by telling children to obey their parents.  I like that!  Don’t you?  As a father of three daughters – I agree that children should obey their parents.  I once worked with a youth pastor that said this was one of the four Scriptures he remembers his father quoting all the time as he was growing up.  It sounds to me like some good instruction!

As we look into the first part of this passage we see that the Greek word used for children suggests we are talking about a young child.  I believe it was referring to a child still under parental care and nurture.  Don’t ask me when that command is lifted – I’m not sure at what age we are not required to obey our parents – maybe when our children can provide for themselves.  I know most children believe it is much earlier.  What do you think? At what point is the command to obey one’s parents no longer in force?  Or is it always in force?

Like many passages in the Bible – people often read the part they want to hear and not the rest or at least the context in which the passage is given.  In the days to come we will look more deeply into these few short verses and what surrounds them.  I hope you stay with me and give comments – as the Scripture is unfolded around us.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
