Hide God’s Word in Our Hearts

Psalm 119:11

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

82015 RayHave you ever played memory games? I remember playing Concentration – I enjoyed that game. I also remember playing other type games that were considered brain games – like finding the hidden pictures in Highlight magazine or finding what was different about two pictures.

Do you remember when we use to memorize dozens of phone numbers? This was before cell phones where we simply name the person and the phone calls them. I could rattle off dozens and dozens of numbers.

Did you ever memorize Scripture? I had a friend that memorized the whole book of James.

Speaking of memorizing Scripture – today’s passage speaks about hiding the Word of God in our hearts. Psalm 119:11 – I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. When Satan tempted Jesus – it was the Word of God – hidden in His heart – that helped Him battle sin. Jesus quoted Scripture on numerous occasions to battle Satan. We can do the same – but only if we have hidden the Word of God in our hearts.

Whether it is through Scripture memorization – or simply a familiarity with the Word of God and its truths – God’s Word can help us battle temptation and sin. 1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

We need to become students of the Word of God. We need to saturate our hearts with His truths – found in the Bible. Join a Bible Study – join a small group that discusses the Bible – join a Sunday School class – and grow in your knowledge and understanding of Christ.

When we build up our knowledge and understanding of Christ – we will be able to combat Satan at every turn. Ephesians 6:16–17 – 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
