Christian Marriage
Genesis 2:24
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
I often preach and teach about marriage – Christian marriage. In society – there is much confusion surrounding marriage these days. We can find God’s intent in the second chapter of the Bible. In the first book of the Bible – Genesis – we read God’s intent for marriage – a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. God’s design – from the beginning of time – was for one man and one woman to become a family.
A number of times over the years in counseling I have run into men and women who have not allowed the new family – the two becoming one – to become primary in their lives. It is OK to love momma – it is OK to love poppa – but in order for the new bond – the new family to work – it must become primary.
If the marriage bond is primary – after our relationship with God of course – than anything that takes away from this primary relationship is not good. When hobbies become more important than our marriage – when work – when the TV or computer – when our children – when other relationships – become more important than this primary relationship – it cannot be good for the marriage – for the church.
Marriages that start out with such promise – many times end in brokenness because we have failed to keep this relationship primary. We have allowed other things or other people to capture our hearts and minds. I have experienced my wife being more sensitive to this than I have been. She can identify when I have allowed other things to become more important than our relationship. At times I get defensive when she shares – in love – what she sees or feels. Most often than not – she is right – and I come to understand that I have allowed our relationship to slip in importance – not on purpose – but by my actions.
Genesis 2:24 – For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
