Thoughts and Reflections

Here We Go With 2016

Ephesians 4:22-24

22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

112015 Ray McDonaldOne of my favorite passages is Philippians 2:5 – Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.  We recently handed out  WWJD bracelets at church.  WWJD stands for What Would Jesus Do? The bracelets are a reminder that we should constantly think about how Jesus would handle a given situation – and try to model His example.  As we enter 2016 – I pray that we will ask ourselves that question throughout the year – WWJD.

In today’s Scripture we are told to turn away from the sins of our life – the sins we lived with before turning to Christ. Ephesians 4:22-24 – You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Putting off the old self is not easy.  Another favorite passage goes like this – 2 Corinthians 5:17 – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!  I usually add – but the old doesn’t go very far!

Putting off the old self is not easy!  We’re told to put off our old self – which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires.  Paul then instructs us to be made new in the attitude of our minds.  The attitude of our minds!  Changing from the old self to the new self starts with the attitude of our minds.  This is another passage that helped form a favorite phrase or saying of mine – Christianity boils down to attitude – and I often add – the condition and position of one’s mind.

Dennis Green – when he was the coach of the Arizona Cardinals NFL team – had a meltdown in a post game interview after playing the Chicago Bears.  He said that now famous line – they are who we thought they wereOur thoughts are very important.  We are instructed in today’s passage to be made new in the attitude of our mindsWe are told to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Today – I pray for you and for me – that we would put on a new mind – daily – and let our minds be transformed by the renewing of the Spirit.  I pray that we would think on good things – Godly things – and be transformed into the mind and likeness of Christ.

Another favorite passage – one we ended with in Sunday’s message – calls us to be transformed after the likeness of Christ rather than the pattern or likeness of the world.  Romans 12:2 – Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
