Thoughts and Reflections

With All My Heart

Psalm 138:1

I will praise you, O Lord, with all my heart; before the “gods” I will sing your praise.

112015 Ray McDonaldWhat do we do with all our heart?  What gets all of our attention?  What is it that takes first place in our thinking – above all other things? What is it that totally focus on in our lives?

I know some sports fanatics (fans) who support their teams with all their heart.  They paint their vehicles with their favorite team’s colors.  They wear team jerseys – jackets – hats – and more.  They don’t miss a game.  They talk about the game all week before their team plays and all week afterward – to anyone who will listen and even some who won’t (if they had a chance).  I love watching my Orioles – Ravens – and Wizards – play ball.  Some of my Facebook friends also seem to enjoy watching the Capitals (hockey) – and they seem to have a good shot this year to play in the post season.  My favorite teams have high draft picks this year (which means they didn’t play too well this past year.  There have been a number of years of late – say for the Ravens – that they have picked late in the first round because they won the Super Bowl or made it into the playoffs.

I was listening to Francis Chan the other day on Exponential13’s webcast and he quoted this passage – Revelation 2:4 – Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. Frances talked about his own life and how as he reviewed some old sermons he came to the realization that he was more in love with Jesus before than he felt he was even now.  He seemed to have a more prophetic voice in the past than now and it floored him.  Are we still as in love with Jesus as when we first came to Christ or first started our ministries? Have we grown complacent in our faith?  When teams grow complacent – they tend to relax and not prepare or practice as hard.  It usually shows up on game day.

As disciples of Jesus Christ we are to love Jesus more than anything.  Jesus said it this way – Mark 12:30 – Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.  Love God with everything!  Do we love Jesus with everything?  Is spending time with Jesus the first thing we think about when we awaken each morning?  Is making disciples of Jesus the focus of our church?  Are we involved in ministries where outsiders say about us – they really love Jesus?  If not – we should be.  If not – what will we do to return to our first love – Jesus!  What will it take for us to love God with our everything?

This Sunday we will look at what pleases Jesus.  Don’t miss this message – the conclusion of a three-part series on Discerning God’s Will in an Ever-Changing World at our 8:15 or 11:00 am worship services at First UMC in Laurel, MD.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
