Christ Modeled Love For Us

Romans 5:10

For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

112015 Ray McDonaldWhen the Steelers lost this past weekend – several Ravens fans and Bengals fans sheered on Facebook. Steeler & Bengal fans cheered that the Ravens didn’t even make the playoffs this year. As a matter of fact – they Ravens were the whipping boys for most of the league (except for the Steelers – lol).

Currently – as a Ravens and Redskins fan – I am cheering for the Broncos – because I’d love to see the Pats lose and Peyton Manning get another Super Bowl win. Fans of one team have a hard time rooting for other teams.

Baseball is a month away (pitchers and catchers reporting soon). The Hot Stove has had a lot of rumors and signings. The Orioles – my favorite team – went well out of their normal pattern and signed Chris Davis to a 7 year $161 million dollar contract. They have retained three of their most significant free agents. Several teams that compete against the Orioles in the Eastern Division of the AL have also signed significant players while the Yankees have not signed anyone to date.

I’m writing about sports today because many of us can associate with our favorite team and our favorite teams rivals. Some would even say they hate the other teams – especially our nearest rivals.

I could also write about the Presidential race in 2016. There are probably some favorites of ours and some candidates we would never want to see elected (and they might not be the same people). I have heard some say – even the candidates – that some candidates should be disqualified from running. They lift up previous episodes of lying and doing things that could be deemed criminal as their reasons. Others believe some candidates are unstable because of some of the statements they have made. Some have even declared they will move out of the country if some candidates (on both sides) are elected (now that is radical for sure).

We could even go to this May and General Conference of the UMC.  People stand in far different places on several issues facing the church.  Liberals/Progressives on the far left have certain views while Conservatives/Traditionalists – have views that are far to the right.  Moderates or those in the middle and folks not far left or far right are also in the mix as we debate together and discern God’s will for our church – our denomination.  I imagine love is needed by all to deal with our differences.

Who do we not like? Are there people we wouldn’t want to attend our church (I sure hope not)? Are there people we dislike or even hate? The passage today helps us understand that all are welcome in God’s eyes. Romans 5:10 – For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

Christ willingly gave His life for us – while we were still His enemies – not after we accepting Him as our Lord and Savior. He loved us before we loved Him. He models for us – radical love – true love – godly love.  We need to lead a life where love is essential and first in our pattern of living.  We need to be less judgmental and more open to embrace others and allowing God to work on them unto holiness – IMHO.  That does not mean we accept sin – but as the old saying goes – love the sinner but not the sin.  Jesus never loves our sin – but from before we decided to follow Him (or strive to do so) – He loved us!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
