God Is God – And We Are Not!

Job 38:4

Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand.

112015 Ray McDonaldSaturday I sent out an e-mail to the congregation about helping a family in Florida. This family lost everything in the recent storms. You can see the loss in this video.

This family – friends of a couple from our church (Steve and Natasha) – has lost everything. We talked about them in church today – and will receive funds for them at church along with clothes (sizes and such were sent Saturday). You can also donate through the families GoFundMe page – https://www.gofundme.com/q8qwu9kc.

When I looked at the video above – I noticed that the house has literally been lifted off the foundation. The foundation was there – but the house had been lifted right off of the foundation. Not sure if that is a foundation issue or how the house was tied into the foundation. I mean – the footers and the slap were still there – but the house built on the foundation was removed. Someone who does this for a living can tell me what happened.

I thought of today’s passage when I thought about foundations. Here is today’s passage in partial context. Job 38:1–7 – 1 Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? 3 Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. 4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. 5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? 6 On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone— 7 while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

Sometimes things happen that make little sense to us. Job had that going on! He was suffering and couldn’t understand it. He loved God and tried to serve God with all his might – yet his world was falling down around him. He lost family – friends – possessions – and health.

Have we ever had a discussion with God where we tried to tell God what to do or how to operate? Have we ever tried to be God? Have we ever complained to God – or asked God if He still cared about us? Have we ever tried to tell God how to be God?

God has laid the foundation of the world and has even built our lives around us. God has watched our faithfulness and our unfaithfulness. God is good to His word and His promises. If we wake up some morning and find God far off – it wasn’t God that walked away – but rather it was our straying.

The author of Job says that God asks – Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?

God is God and we are not! God knows His part in the universe – and we need to remember our part – to follow God no matter what! Whether life is good or not so good. We are to follow God whether things go our way or if they don’t. Because God is God and we are not.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
