We Need To Tell Someone About Jesus! Today!

Luke 19:40

“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

112015 Ray McDonaldHow many of our readers today enjoy a good detective/police show like me? Some of my personal favorites over the years are shows like Hill Street BluesDragnetBlue BloodsNCIS – and Baretta. On these TV shows victims are often encouraged to speak out or to witness so that someone else will not have to suffer what they have suffered. Trying to keep others from being hurt is a strong argument and many times a victim will cooperate to put the bad guys behind bars.

An episode of Blue Bloods had Erin Reagan used that very approach with a young woman who had been attacked – trying to get her to testify so that others wouldn’t be attacked.  Many detective shows use this approach or episode design. Speak out so that others will be protected or saved.

Today’s passage records the words of Jesus speaking about his disciples to the Pharisees – if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out. The Pharisees wanted Jesus to make His disciples keep quiet.  Jesus told them if they did keep quiet – the rocks would cry out.  Are the rocks clearing their throats in your life dear readers?  Here is today’s passage in partial context – of course you will recognize it as part of the Palm Sunday story. Luke 19:35-40 – 35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. 37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: 38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” 40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

So the question that hits me today – is – who will speak out? Think about it. How many opportunities have we faced to speak out for Jesus – only to let the opportunity pass without speaking? Are our children grown – and yet they have never really heard us talk about our love for Jesus? Have we worked for 20-40 years in the same office – and yet our co-workers really don’t know about our faith in Christ? Have we lived in the same house for decades – and yet our neighbors have never had a conversation with us where they left knowing without a doubt that we walk with Jesus? When is the last time we stuck our neck out to tell someone about Jesus? Some of us have a hard time speaking about Jesus at church. The world is filled with people who need to hear the good news about Jesus in our life – if indeed we have had a life changing walk with Him.  Even if we are not outgoing – we can witness our faith through our lives and use words when we see the opportunity.

I don’t mean to use this next passage as a stick or rod to hit us over the head – but whatever works to get the church talking and witnessing and speaking out about Jesus. Matthew 10:32-33 – 32 “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.”

Somebody is going to hell in our family – in our workplace – in our neighborhood – if they don’t hear about and receive Jesus. I can’t put it in any easier terms to understand. I can’t put it any plainer. They need someone to tell them about the saving grace of Jesus Christ. They need someone to tell them about the Old Rugged Cross and how Jesus loved them enough to die to pay for their sins. They need someone to tell them how Jesus changed their lives and could change their life too. They need someone to speak out! I’m not trying to lay guilt on us but rather I am trying to share the truth that people need to hear about Jesus and to give us an urgency to speak out.  Who will speak out to them? Who will not worry about what others will say – but rather – put their faith out there for someone to see and possibly come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior? Don’t wait for the rocks to cry out and miss the opportunity to stand up for Jesus and speak out! After all – didn’t someone along life’s journey speak the truth to you?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
