Palm Sunday

Zechariah 9:9

Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

112015 Ray McDonaldThis week I want to write about Passion Week.  Jesus went through so much as He walked toward the Cross.  Tomorrow begins Passion or Holy week – and it begins on Palm Sunday.

Today I will write about Passion/Palm Sunday. Tomorrow – the first Sunday or Holy week – has commonly been called Palm Sunday – because of the Palm branches that were placed on Christ’s path as He entered Jerusalem according to the Scriptural account.

John 12:13 – They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”  “Blessed is the King of Israel!”

An Old Testament passage that relates to this Sunday is found in Zechariah – today’s passage.

Zechariah 9:9 – Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Passion Sunday is a name given this Sunday because Jesus willingly came to the cross – came to Jerusalem – came to His passion and death!  The King of kings gave Himself up for us and Passion/Palm Sunday was the start of His last week.

Don’t miss a single service this week – they will all be special.  Starting with tomorrow’s Palm Sunday service – followed by Thursday night’s Holy Thursday (or Maundy Thursday) service (7 pm) – which will feature a cantata by the choir and holy communion.  On Friday this coming week – Good Friday – we will have something very special.  If you miss Good Friday – Sunday morning – Easter – will have less meaning.  Of course we have an Easter Sunrise service at 6:30 am followed by breakfast and our regular worship services at 8:15 & 11 am.  Hope to see you there at First United Methodist Church of Laurel!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
