Set Our Minds On Jesus!

Colossians 3:2

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

112015 Ray McDonaldThe other day I wrote about my earlier days of playing basketball. A question often arises when teaching people to shoot a basketball. The question – where do you aim when shooting a basketball? Some say the front of the rim – some say the back of the rim – while still others say the middle of the basket (try to swish the ball each time without touching the rim). A survey was done and of those who responded – 46% said back of the rim – 34% said front of the rim – and 20% said center of the basket. Personally I aim for the basket – the center – and hope for the best!

One of my favorite sayings of all time goes like this – aim at nothing and you’re bound to hit it! In most of life – jobs – hobbies – relationships – we need to be aiming at something. When a couple has been dating for a while – one might ask the other – where do you see our relationship heading? Clue – you better have a good answer or the relationship might be headed out the door! Saying I don’t know – can’t we just enjoy things the way they are going now – normally is not a good answer. Setting our aim is very important.

Setting goals is important – for example – career goals – relationship goals – personal goals – are good to have in mind. When the guys asked me if they could marry my daughters I asked them what their goals in life were – what was their plan moving forward.

In today’s passage we are called to set our minds on things above – rather that the things of this earth. Here it is in partial context. Colossians 3:1–10 – 1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

Let us set our minds on Jesus – on His grace and His righteousness. Let us take the focus off of ourselves and on our desires. Let us focus on Jesus! Let us set goals for our spiritual development. Let us maintain our focus and do all we can to achieve them!  Let us focus on the things of God – the things above – rather than the things of this earth.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
