Hope In The Lord!

Isaiah 40:31

…but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

112015 Ray McDonaldHope in the Orioles! They started the season 7-0 and have a good balance – in such a small sample size – of hitting – power – pitching – and defense. They lost last night for the first time this season and still hold a 2.5 game lead over the second place team 8 games into the new season. They are hitting homers at a record pace and their pitching has been better than they expected. I have hope in the Orioles!

Hope in the Warriors! Possibly the best team in NBA history – last night they won their 73rd win of the season to break the previous record of 72 set by the Bulls in 95-96 season. The Bulls were led by Michael Jordan while the Warriors are led by Stephen Curry. Curry broke his own record for made 3’s in a season. His previous record for an NBA season was 286 and this season he hit on 402 3’s. Hope in the Warriors!

What is it we have hope in these days? Hope in our health? Hope in our wealth? Hope in our marriage? Hope in our children? Hope in our church? Hope in our faith?

If our hope is in our health – it can be taken away quickly. I’ve known people who were apparently very healthy – die in a moments notice or develop life-threatening sickness seemingly over night.

If our hope is in our wealth – it can be taken away quickly. I’ve known people who have seemingly had it all – only to lose it all in the market or in business or in unwise spending.

If our hope is in our marriage – it can be taken away quickly. I’ve witnessed seemingly strong marriages dissolve in short order. We could continue with where we place our hope and all come up with exceptions to the rule. We all know of children (and parents) who have disappointed. We know churches that have fallen (I’m praying hard for the United Methodist Church as our General Conference meets in May). We even know people who had a seemingly strong faith – fall. It happens. The Orioles strong start could still lead to a losing season and the Warriors could fall in the playoffs and fail to win back-to-back championships.

But there is One we can always place our hope in securely. Here is today’s passage in partial context. Isaiah 40:28–31 – 28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Hope in the Lord! If we place our hope in God – God will not fail us and we will be renew our strength. We will soar above the troubles of the day (not meaning we will not face them but we will overcome them) as we walk with God. Whatever we are facing today – whatever or whoever is failing or falling down around us – focus on God and God will see us through!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
