When Is Enough – Enough?

1 Timothy 6:8

But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.

112015 Ray McDonaldWhen is enough – enough? Yesterday we wrote about fleshly desires and how they can be contrary to the Holy Spirit’s desire for us. Today I ask the question – When is enough – enough?

In a society where entertainers – from ball players to actors – get millions upon millions for acting in a movie or TV show and playing a game – When is enough – enough?

In a society where the haves and the have nots are so far apart – When is enough – enough? When should those of us with plenty feel an obligation to help those who have very little? (I know – some people have made personal decisions that have gotten them where they are today – but there are plenty of people – if you have this concern – to help who are trying their best and are down on their luck).

Have we determined the difference between need and want in our lives? I’m not saying having some of our wants is bad – but have we at least drawn a line and know where need and want depart? When is enough – enough?

Here is today’s passage in partial context. 1 Timothy 6:2–10 – 2 These are the things you are to teach and insist on. 3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Think about this for a moment. When we purchased our last vehicle – did we need a new one or simply want a new one? When we upgraded from one home to another or added a beach house – did we need a new one or an additional one or simply want one? When we bought that last dress or suit – did we need one or want one? When we bought the new set of golf clubs or purse – did we need one or want one? It is OK to have some of the finer things in life – but here are some additional questions. Are we tithing our income to God’s work yet? Do we know someone who has tried but fallen short of meeting his or her needs that could use a helping hand? When is enough – enough?

It is not just the wealthiest among us who need to think about this subject. I have read studies that said the poorest among us is rich compared to the world’s average. We all must face the question – When is enough – enough? When have we been content? When have we been satisfied? When is enough – enough?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
