Our Rock of Refuge

Psalm 71:3

Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress.

RayMcDWhat do we rely upon? Up until the last few years – as a Ravens fan – I could rely on them having a winning record and going to the playoffs.

What do we rely upon? I can rely on my brother – when I ask him how his day went – telling me – same old same old – more times than not.

What do we rely upon? As a little redhead once sang – the sun will come up tomorrow!

What do we rely upon? Paying taxes every April 15th!

What do we rely upon? Do we have friends we can rely on – even when times get tough?

What do we rely upon? Do we have an old reliable? Do we have a vehicle with 300,000 miles on that has gotten us to and from without a hitch? Do we have a cell phone that has outlived the contract with the cell company (I have a friend that still has an old flip phone)?

What do we rely upon? Can we count on our spouse – our children – our parents? I hope the answer is yes – but it probably isn’t yes for everyone.

My guess is the only one that is reliable 100% of the time is our God. Here is today’s passage in partial context. Psalm 71:1–5 – In you, Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame. In your righteousness, rescue me and deliver me; turn your ear to me and save me. Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress. Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of those who are evil and cruel. For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth.

You oh Lord have been my hope! It is You and only You that I can rely on everyday! From my youth I have counted on your and turned to You for strength and protection.

Some things and some folks can be pretty reliable – but none is as reliable as God. God is our rock and our refuge – our rock and our salvation! We can count on God through thick and thin. When times get hard and some may fall away – God is always there for us!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
