Be Still, And Know That I Am God

Psalm 46:10

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

RayMcDI took a day off Monday and did some yard work. I must have needed the time alone with God and my thoughts. During one of my breaks I sat and was enjoying the quiet around me. I began to think of my dad (who died 4 years ago a week ago last Sunday) – remembering the many times we worked together in the yard at home and in the gardens we had. I began to cry (real men cry – right?) – I am an emotional person. It was a cleansing cry – I felt drained and relaxed afterward. I continued in my sorrow to feel the peace and quiet God offers even in troubled times.

I haven’t been deer hunting in several years – mainly because of my busy schedule and a lack of a location to hunt. But some of the best moments of my falls past were sitting in a deer stand long before morning broke – sitting in the still and quiet of the pre-dawn darkness – thinking and praying and spending time with God. In my mind I often thought of today’s passage – be still – and know that I am God. Whether the noise or quiet of the day are upon us – God can give us stillness and quiet.

There are times when my life if not quiet or still – times when it seems like nothing is going right and most everything is actually going wrong. It is times like these when I really need to know the stillness of God and His authority in my life and the world around me. I need the quiet that trusting in Him brings. I have had many a moment when all seemed lost – except for my faith in God.

Let’s read today’s passage in partial context. Psalm 46:1-11 – God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. 7 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. 8 Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. 10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” 11 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Whatever comes your way – rest in the Lord – seek the stillness and quiet that trust in Him will bring. When things are hot and heavy – God can bring us peace and quiet. Be still – and know that God is God!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
