Love Is Essential – It is Required

John 13:34

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

RayMcDLove is essential. Without love we will not represent Jesus well in a world that so needs Jesus. We are even told we will be forgiven as we forgive others – and forgiveness requires love.

Luke 11:4 – Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.  And lead us not into temptation.

Often in the Bible we are told that what we do will be done to us or that we must model the example of Jesus in all we do. Loving our enemies is hard – but at times loving those in our own church family appears to be hard as well. Satan loves division in the church and will try to pit members – sisters and brothers in Christ – against each other.

Jesus – teaching His disciples – His followers – about love – said these words in today’s passage: A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

In our weekly Bible Study on Tuesday morning we talked about love and loving others. Here is where we will head this coming Tuesday – there is always room for one more. 1 John 3:11–18 – 11 For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him. 16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

Many places in the Bible we are told about Jesus’ great love – about God’s great love. We are called to model it for others. The question that keeps coming into my mind is this – am I modeling the love of Christ?

John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Ephesians 5:25 – Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.

In today’s passage we are reminded that we are to love others as Christ modeled love for us. How does our model measure up? Men – are we loving our wives as Christ loves the church (remember He gave up His life for the church)?  Sisters and brothers – are we loving one another as Christ loves us? Do we show love to others? Love is essential!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
