Christ Is After The Heart (The Attitude)

Proverbs 17:22

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

RayMcDI’ve spent a lot of time over the years talking about our attitude as Christians. I created a saying some 30 plus years ago that goes like this – Christianity boils down to attitude. Over the year I’ve added a follow-up statement and the saying now reads – Christianity boils down to attitude – the condition and position of one’s heart. God is after our hearts – God desires a cheerful heart – a heart set on Christ. Let’s look at some passages that speak about the heart.

Christ is after the heart (the attitude). Proverbs 23:26 – My son, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways.

Christ is after the heart (the attitude). Proverbs 4:23 – Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Christ is after the heart (the attitude). Proverbs 3:5 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.

Christ is after the heart (the attitude). Psalm 51:10 – Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Christ is after the heart (the attitude). John 14:27 – Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Christ is after the heart (the attitude). Philippians 4:7 – And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Christ is after the heart (the attitude). Matthew 5:8 – Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Christ is after the heart (the attitude). Mark 12:30 – Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.

Christ is after the heart (the attitude). Here’s today’s passage in partial context. Proverbs 17:17–22 – 17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity. 18 One who has no sense shakes hands in pledge and puts up security for a neighbor. 19 Whoever loves a quarrel loves sin; whoever builds a high gate invites destruction. 20 One whose heart is corrupt does not prosper; one whose tongue is perverse falls into trouble. 21 To have a fool for a child brings grief; there is no joy for the parent of a godless fool. 22 A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

Let us seek after Christ with all of our heart – with a cheerful heart – with a heart set on Christ. Let us be cheerful and welcoming to all with the love of Christ. We will attract more people to Christ with a cheerful heart – a heart filled with the Joy of Christ – than with any other heart condition.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
