God’s Word Is A Light For Our Path

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

RayMcDOK – yesterday was a day when some really expressed themselves on Facebook (and I imagine it will continue). I thought about closing my account several times during the election process. I came even closer on Wednesday as people complained about the election results. It wasn’t that they were complaining but how they were complaining. Some – even clergy colleagues – were super upset with those who elected the other candidate from their choice. I haven’t heard such name calling in some time (at least not since the pre-election process from both candidates).

We could write for days about the shortcomings of both main candidates. But the time for this is past (if there ever was a time). The time now is to come together and support the candidate(s) elected (I’m not happy – for instance – with several persons elected in Maryland and in the country) – IMHO.

My prayer yesterday and today and moving forward is that God will show us the path to take. As Christians and as Americans we need a path forward. We need a plan if we agree and if we disagree with the path we are currently on as a nation. We need a path to walk where we can be faithful to God and country (if and when possible).

What is it that helps you – dear readers – pick a path to walk in life? Agree or disagree with the path before us – we need a plan moving forward. The plan should not come from our minds but rather from God’s Word – through Christ. Colossians 2:8 – See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. Our minds will naturally lead us to where we want to go. The Word of God will lead us where God wants us to go.

Please do not listen to the rhetoric spouted by those who speak hate or division on any human side. Instead read the Bible and see what God has to say. Here is a passage that I have used after many elections. Romans 13:1–5 – 1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

I have had to turn to Romans 13 many times in my adult life when the candidate – nationally or locally – I supported – didn’t get elected. That person was my President – my Senator – my Councilperson – the elected leader that didn’t catch God off guard when they were elected. I have had to turn to Romans 13 for more than those elected. I’ve had to turn to it when laws were passed I didn’t support as well. We need to hear it today and other passages as well that will help us determine our path forward.

Dear readers – turn to God’s Word to lighten the path we are to walk. Psalm 119:105 – Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.

P.S. – Today is the birthday of the US Marines. Semper fi!
