No One Can Serve Two Masters

Matthew 6:24

No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

RayMcDOk – Christmas is coming – ready or not. Christmas has turned into a commercial season for many for sure. Buying gifts is all the rage. Stores are trying all sorts of ways to get you to buy from them – online stores as well. The advertisements are amazing at times.

Christmas is a good time to determine where our priorities are for sure. When we check our expenditures for Christmas compared to say what we give to God’s work through His church – we might get the idea. When God’s Word says much about giving to God and God’s work but nothing about giving gifts to one another at Christmas – we might realize that we have bought into the lies about Christmas. Instead of a season to give to God it has turned into a season to out do the neighbors and spoil our children and grandchildren.

Our church – not unlike many churches this time of the year – is behind in our giving in relationship to our budget. We budgeted what we thought was a conservative budget for the working of God’s work for 2016. Unfortunately – for a variety of reasons – our giving has not kept up with our expectations.

Sunday was an amazing day in the life of our church. At the end of each worship service we called people to make a commitment to Christ – to pray the sinner’s prayer – to be sure they were sure of their salvation. Over 30 people had a come to Jesus moment. It was very powerful and I was deeply moved and encouraged. In order to properly disciple this group and others (we have 25 new members joining soon) we need to continue with the ministries we have and do even more. The budget supports these efforts.

I want to encourage and challenge our members to consider a Christmas gift or a yearend gift to our church so these type days will continue. Our household will be giving an extra $500 toward our ministry’s budget. Would anyone be willing to match that or even do more if you are able? If 50 families from the church were to give an extra $500 that would be an additional $25,000 toward God’s work at First UMC of Laurel. That would be amazing and would help significantly toward our shortfall this year.

Our blog goes out to over 2,100 people each day from around the world. If nearly half of them or around 1,000 people would donate $25 each that would be another $25,000 toward keeping the ministry of Jesus Christ alive and well at First Church. If those same 1,000 would donate $10 each – it would mean another $10,000. Give whatever you are able. Every cent counts. Readers can donate online on our website – http://fumcl.org/. On our website is an online giving link. You can also find an online giving link on my blog page – www.raymcdonald.wordpress.com. You can also send a check to First UMC at 424 Main Street – Laurel – MD 20707.

Help us keep alive this dynamic Bible believing ministry and give ourselves a Christmas present too. Let us prove that God’s work is more important than the material things we might spend our money on this Christmas.

Here’s today’s passage in partial context. Matthew 6:19–24 – 19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! 24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Let’s make our money work for our Lord by making a donation to First UM Church today. All donations are tax deductible. May God be glorified!

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
