Loving The Unlovable

Romans 13:8

“Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.”

RayMcDAs the inauguration unfolded and the support and protests took place – it was not easy to see much love. Republicans and democrats in the same home and in the same church were at odds. There were those who supported the new President and some who opposed him – and they were miles apart in their views. Even those who protested – standing for love and women’s rights – turned away a group of women who happened to be pro-life. Hatred and anger where more plentiful than love. Even in the church – some colleagues protested and some supported and some simply prayed.

We will not solve our differences – I’m convinced – coming to that understanding after 62 years of life and 40 plus years in ministry. What we need to learn is not a way to convince the other side they are wrong but rather how we can live and love together. I’m also not naive enough to think this can always happen. Some differences are just to great and are too opposed to one another. Yet – as long as we call ourselves after Christ – we are called to love – even our enemies.

Luke 6:32 – If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.

Matthew 5:44 – But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

What we should be doing – instead of trying to convince the other side to any issue how wrong they are – is showing love and learning to love – even in the face of our differences. Loving the lovable is easy – loving the unlovable – now that takes real faith in a real God.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
