Humility Is Not Easy!

Philippians 2:8

And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death – even death on a cross!

RayMcDHumility is not easy! Humility is something many lack. I recently wrote that selfishness was the norm among many of us. Many of us think of ourselves first and others – of at all – last. We see this among many leaders today as well – from both sides of the political aisle and in other areas of leadership too.

Humility is not easy! Today’s passage reminds us that Jesus – the Lord eternal – humbled Himself for our sake. He thought not of Himself – but rather – He thought of us. Philippians 2:8 – And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death – even death on a cross!

Humility is not easy! Valuing others above ourselves is what we are called to do as Christians – as followers of Christ. We are to model Christ’s humility. Paul wrote in Philippians 2:3 – Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.

Humility is not easy! Here’s today’s passage in partial context. Philippians 2:6–11 – Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death – even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Humility is not easy – when the natural leaning for most of us is selfishness. We are called to be different than the world – than the natural – and to reject the sin nature of selfishness. Paul wrote in Colossians 3:12 – Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Humility is not easy – it is contrary to our human nature – at least for most of us. Peter wrote in 1 Peter 5:5 – In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

Humility is not easy – but it is what Jesus modeled for us. If we wish to be more like Christ we need to overcome our selfishness and practice humility.

Humility is not easy – but humility will help us in our marriages. Humility will help us with our person-to-person skills. Humility will help us develop a better work-ethic. Being humble is not easy – but it is what we are called to be!

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
