The Word Is Our Tool!
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
The more we know the Word of God – the more useful a tool it will be for us in our spiritual journey. We use to say – the more we use our Sword (our Bible) the more useful that tool becomes to us – so we encouraged people to bring their Bibles to church and to follow along. Today we can read our Bible on our smart phones and even follow along on YouVersion.com and leave notes on the sermons.
Reading and storing up the Word of God in our heart/mind is so important. Jesus resisted the Devil when he tempted Him by quoting the Word of God. Jesus was such a student of the Word of God that He knew when Satan was using it wrongly! Matthew 4:1–11 – 1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” 7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” 10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
Today’s passage reminds us as well – that we should hide the Word of God in our hearts. Psalm 119:11 – I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. The Word of God can help to keep us from sinning! See how Jesus used it in the passage above!
We read elsewhere in the Bible that storing the Word up is a blessing. Proverbs 2:1-5 – 1 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, 3 and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, 4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, 5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.
Putting the Word in our hearts is so significant. Colossians 3:16 – Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.
Read the Bible daily (we can get a daily reading on www.youversion.com – I’m following the Bible in a year and encourage you to pick one and follow it daily).
Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
