Husbands – We’re Called To Love Our Wives

Ephesians 5:25

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. NIV

Brothers – do you love your wives? Is loving your wife first and foremost in your mind? I posted something this week on Facebook – the day some women didn’t show up for work. Something I ponder. Why would my wife want to be equal with me? From where I sit that would be a demotion in status on her part! I don’t think of my wife as an equal – she is far above and beyond me – I treasure her.

Husbands, go all out in your love for your wives, exactly as Christ did for the church — a love marked by giving, not getting. The Message

Too many people don’t get this far in the passage.  Most folks get stuck with the 22nd verse.

Ephesians 5:22 – Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.

Husbands – even non-Christian husbands with Christian wives – cling to verse 22 – in trying to get their wives to cave to their wishes – which has nothing to do with submitting as unto the Lord (that discussion is for another devotion).

In skipping back to verse 22 – we should skip back to verse 21 as well.

Ephesians 5:21 – Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Then we can move forward to today’s passage – a command to the husband to love their wife as Christ loved the church – and gave Himself up for her.  The Message says – go all out in your love for your wives . . . a love marked by giving, not getting.

Husbands – how hard do you work at showing your wife that you love her? Are you as willing to change your schedule to help her accomplish something or spend time with her as you are to play nine holes or do something of interest to you? Our wives see how hard we work to fit the things we enjoy into our schedule – and how hard it is to get us to do something for them.

Husbands – do you try to out serve your wife? Christ served His disciples – He even washed their feet – the lowest of low jobs. He loved them and His church so much that He laid down His life for them – going to the cross.

Husbands – do you have a hard time remembering your wife’s birthday – your anniversary – other holidays and special days – while never missing when opening day is or the Super Bowl – or some other meaningless date!

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
