Be Prepared for Life

1 Peter 5:8

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

When I was just a boy – I was a Boy Scout. Be prepared is the Boy Scout’s motto – or it is the song by Scar – envious brother of Mufasa – in the movie Lion King. Being prepared is a good goal for sure. We never know when our lives can change in the next heartbeat. Accidents – sudden deaths – life changing events happen – at times when we least expect them.

A few years ago – life changed for my friend Mike – his family and his friends. He was a well loved teacher at Crofton Meadows Elementary School. He was a man of God loved by most everyone. Several hundred people gathered for his celebration of life service including current and former students and many from our former and current church families. The Board of Education was also well represented – as well as South County folks and friends from all over the area. Mike was well loved by most everyone.

In the flash of an eye – the beat of a heart as it were – all of our lives were changed – forever. As a result of Mike’s passing – my wife and I decided to update our wills. We also made other plans – in case or rather when – one of us leaves the other behind. It was a rude awakening for sure – Mike was ONLY 62 at the time – and that is how old I am today.

I will celebrate the life of a long time member of the local church I serve – tomorrow – she was almost 102. Now that is the age we should pass – not 62 or 27 like a young woman – Megan – who passed so suddenly a few weeks ago. The fact is – most of us will not live to be 102 – and some of us may not make it to our 80’s or 70’s (or even our 30’s as with Megan).

Life happens and often if seems to catch us unprepared. Today’s passage reminds us that we should always be alert and of sober mind – because the enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. We must always be on guard – we must always be prepared – for the devil’s attacks. Satan is always about – trying to catch us with our guard down – waiting to snatch us in a weak moment – ready to pounce on us like an attacking cat. Satan is always ready to attack and we should always be prepared to rebuke him and to meet our Lord! Whether it is our last breath or a temptation that Satan uses to try to bring us down – we should always be prepared and ready to meet our Lord!

Here is today’s passage in partial context. 1 Peter 5:6-11 – Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. Let us resist the devil – standing firm in our faith – being prepared – and ready – because the devil is prowling around – ready to pounce. Be prepared for life and for death and everything in between.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
