God Will Understand Us!

Romans 8:26

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

I have two granddaughters who are two years of age. They are beginning to talk up a storm. It is so cute. At times they are very articulate. At times I need their mother to interpret for me. At times – we both throw up our hands and wonder what they just said! Both are second born – and so this second born middle child connects with them. I love when they jump up into Pop’s lap to snuggle or watch their favorite shows on TV.

We are becoming an increasingly diverse community and country. I’ve entered some establishments and have a hard time understanding the cashier or salesperson because of their accent or dialect. I often call tech support from various companies and often I am connected with someone from another nation – where that tech center is located. It is hard at times for me to understand.

I have a hard time understanding one daughter in particular when she speaks. She mumbles and talks very fast (she claims it is my hearing and it may well be but my wife also has the same issue). I do have hearing loss in one ear but I often use a hearing aid in that ear. It is becoming increasingly hard to hear and understand some people.

At our church – we are also very diverse. When listening to praises or concerns from the congregation – sometimes I have a hard time hearing and repeating what they have said. There are a variety of reasons for not understanding – things like accents – dialects – mumbling – our hearing – and the room dynamics. We try to take a microphone around and that helps.

Have you ever had a concern on your heart that you just didn’t know how to articulate? Ever had a hard time putting into words something on your heart? Maybe it was something that you were asking God – yet just didn’t know how to word it.

Here’s today’s passage in partial context. Romans 8:18–28 – 18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. 26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Have you ever heard someone say – please pray for my friend (family member) – God knows the name and the concern? Unspoken prayer concerns are often lifted as well. We don’t need to know the exact words or concern or even the person in need – simply raising our prayers to God is enough – because God knows.

Try as they might – by grandchildren – at times – have a hard time getting us to understand their words. But eventually – we come to understand. God will understand us – even utter words for us. Are call is simply to reach out to God and allow God to cover it all! And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
