How To Turn From Addictions

James 4:7

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Some of us have addictive personalities or makeups. Our constitution is not strong enough – at times – to withstand the attraction of what we desire. We can be manipulated by things or persons to do things we wouldn’t ordinarily do if it weren’t for that which we become addicted.

For some of us it is hard to resist things we desire. For some – alcohol or drugs become substances that can control our lives. We try to fight the attraction – but often we are too weak to stand opposed to our desires. We try to dry out – we try rehab – we try going cold turkey – and for some it works – but for many of us – it doesn’t. Drugs and alcohol can control our lives and even take our life.

For some of us it is hard to resist things we desire. For some – food is an addiction. I know we must eat to survive – but for some of us – we eat beyond survival. For some – we are addicted to food. There is an old saying – eat to live – don’t live to eat. Over eating can not only control our lives – it can even take our life

For some of us it is hard to resist things we desire. I think we get the picture. Lots of other things can become addictive. For instance sex can be very addictive. Most commercials on TV seem to in some way play to our sexual desires and addictions. Porn is a major industry – because of sexual addictions.

James wrote – James 4:7 – Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Satan is the tempter. Satan will try to weasel into our minds – our very souls – with something that will take our eyes off of Jesus and onto our personal desires. James’ answer to our personal desires and addictions – submit to God. In AA they urge folks to focus on their higher power – to seek and develop a deeper relationship with the higher power. In Christianity – the call is to submit to God.

James urges us to give up our sinful – selfish ways and submit to God. James 4:7–10 –7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

What are things that help keep our eyes on Jesus and not on our addictions? Things like prayer – reading and studying the Word – worship – support groups – accountability – are some of the things that help us focus on Jesus. Some of us don’t even attend worship every week – and somehow expect to remain strong and focused. Are we good at our jobs with only one hour a week or even every other week?

What are we addicted to in our lives? What are we doing to actively rebuke those addictions? How sincere are we in trying to remain free from our addictions? How sincere are we in our walk with Jesus? James says that Satan – the devil – the tempter – must flee from us when we remain focused on Jesus – on God!

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.

  1. Facebook (and sometimes just my phone) has been an addiction for me especially as I began staying home with my kiddos. I submit it to the Lord daily as to not be controlled by the compulsion to check it. So hard to stay in reality sometimes but we are to think about what is True and what is our good work for that moment.
