Because You Say So Lord!

Luke 5:5

Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

Did we have parents who would say something to us – and we would ask why – they would respond – because I say so? Some parents used that line (I can’t remember my father ever using it but I may have once or twice). Did you? It is a common lines used by many parents.

As parents – we might have wished that our children would respond yes simply because we asked them to do something – after all – we are the parents! Too often – I imagine – that wasn’t the response we got. Sometimes they might have asked why – at times they may have said no – still other times they may have simply ignored us – and on occasion they may have said yes. When they asked why – did we ever say – because I say so?

I always loved when Jesus said to His disciples – If you love me, keep my commands. John 14:15 If you love me – do what I say. I used that line a few time with my children. It didn’t always work. Just like it doesn’t always work with us when Jesus says it to us. We do not always respond the way we should – now do we?

Today’s passage comes from a story about Peter (Simon) fishing and Jesus giving Him a command that seemed unreasonable to Peter. Here’s today’s passage in partial context. Luke 5:1–11 – 1 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” 6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

I wish when Jesus calls me I would always answer – because you say so Lord. Instead of giving God grief – trying to please myself – I so wish my response would always be – because you say so Lord – I will do whatever You say. How about it readers – are you with me? Can we strive to be obedient to God in all He asks of us? Just practice saying because you say so Lord.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
