Being Amazed!

Mark 4:41

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

I’ve been amazed a few times in my life. The first time was when I realized that Jesus loved me enough to die for me and to cover my sins. That just amazed me because I’m not worthy of such love.

Another time had to do with amazing love as well. It was when my wife said she would marry me. I was so amazed that a woman of her qualities would marry a man like me and – after 37 years – still stayed married to me.

Another time I was amazed was when my three daughters were born. To watch them come into the world and know that Carolyn and I had just given birth to three amazing girls – now that was amazing.

Another time I was amazed in my life was when Eddie Murray stood out in the rain in his expensive leather jacket to sign an autograph for me at old Memorial Stadium (after a game was canceled because of the rain).

Another time I was amazed in my life was when I met Andy Stanley and Francis Chan. Aside from them being Christian men that I admire for their ability to share the Gospel – I was amazed that they are both so short (LOL).

Another time I was amazed was when I walked away from an accident with a tractor-trailer – my car being totaled. The police officer on the scene said he was sure he was coming upon a fatality.

The disciples were amazed many times during Jesus’ ministry with them. Today’s passage is just one of those times. Here’s today’s passage in partial context. Mark 4:35–41 – 35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

The disciples were amazed that Jesus could command the wind and the waves – that He could quiet the storm. They were just beginning – according to the placement of this story in Mark’s Gospel – follow Jesus. They had yet understood that Jesus was the Messiah – the Son of David – the Son of God. They were amazed – and God continued to amaze them thru His ministry with them.

What amazes us? Are we amazed easily or does it take an act of God to amaze us? If so – what has God done in our lives to amaze us? I know we can think of something!

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way!
