The Darkness Cannot Overcome The Light – Jesus

John 1:5

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Have you ever tried to go from one doorway to another in a room that is without any lights? There is a room in my basement that only has a switch at one door and not the other. If for some reason I go out in the light or someone follows me and turns off the light – I must return in the dark. It is not always easy for sure! Thank God for the flashlight app on my iPhone. It has helped me avoid stubbing my toe many times.

But – I have often gone around in the dark because I like the light switches to be in the right direction (you know – up for on and down for off). If I turn the light on at one door and off at the next – the switches get out of sequence (I know – a little OCD of me for sure). It is my issue – I’m sure I am alone! Walking in the dark is no fun I must say.

In the passage today we read about the light (Christ) shining in the darkness (the sinful world). Here is today’s passage in partial context. John 1:1–5 – 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Christ has come into the world to shine light on a darkened world – a sinful world. Christ has come to show the love of God – the presence of God – the power of God. Christ has come to show us the path – the lighted path – toward God.

The more and more we invite Christ into our lives – the more light shines in the darkness – which is our sinful lives. We have all sinned and fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23 – for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God). We should invite Christ into every corner of our lives. The darkness cannot overcome the light – Jesus. Jesus is the light that shines in our darkness and enlightens us.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
