What Is On The Inside?

2 Corinthians 4:7

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

I loved Twinkies when I was a kid. The marshmallow center was always a treat. I didn’t know at the time how bad they were for me – all I knew was that they were sweet and good to the taste. I could eat several in a setting.

Most of us have probably heard the phrase – beauty is only skin deep – meaning the outer shell can be pretty but if the inner self is not – the outer shell is all you get. Outer beauty fades – fast! It is the inner beauty that will last. If you married a person that is beautiful inside and out you really have something – but if you had to choose one – go for the inside!

It is the inner self that really counts. Here’s today’s passage in partial context. 2 Corinthians 4:5–12 – For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

Proper preaching – proper witnessing – is all about Jesus – not about us. It is about Christ in us not about our outer shell. It doesn’t matter who we are on the outside – where we live – what we drive – how much or how little we have in the bank. What matters is what is on the inside! If Jesus is on the inside – He will shine through our outer shell to all those around us.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
