Day 42 of Lent 2018

Isaiah 49:1

Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born the Lord called me; from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.

Today is day 42 of the 47 Days of Lent reading plan (Sundays don’t count in the 40 days of Lent). I hope you have stayed with us – this is the final week – Holy Week. Today’s passage is another about the Servant of the Lord. This could be about Isaiah – it could be about Jesus – it might even be about us.

Lent is typically a time to give something up – to stop a bad habit – to deny self – to dig deeper into our walk with Jesus. Today we begin to look at some passages that will lead us to the cross and to the resurrection. Let us focus on Jesus this week – more than usual. Let us identify with the walk and the sacrifice Jesus made for each of us. Jesus came to earth – voluntarily – to walk to the cross. Can we imagine how we would face our last week on earth? How we would face out death – when we had the power to avoid it?

Here is today’s passage in partial context. Isaiah 49:1–4 – 1 Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born the Lord called me; from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name. 2 He made my mouth like a sharpened sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me into a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver. 3 He said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.” 4 But I said, “I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing at all. Yet what is due me is in the Lord’s hand, and my reward is with my God.”

During this Lenten season – make it a point to seek after Jesus more and more. Seek after Him. Understand – as well as we can – His walk and His suffering. Remember what He gave up for us. God bless you as you walk with Jesus to the Cross of Calvary! Connect with our Lord on every level possible. Seek what God would have you (and me) understand about this most Holy Week. The Father put the Spirit on Jesus – the Holy Trinity – as He walked on this earth (remember how the Spirit descended like a dove as Jesus was baptized?). There was a purpose for Jesus’ coming and it was for this week. From before He was formed in His mother’s womb – He was called and anointed.

Walk with me toward the cross. Deny yourself as I deny myself and let us draw near to Christ.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.

P.S. – This Sunday will be Easter. It is the easiest Sunday to get someone to attend worship with you. Invite someone each day during Holy Week to join you for Sunday’s services. We will have a Sunrise service at 6:30 am followed by a pancake breakfast. Our normal services will be at 8:30 & 11:00 am. Invite someone today to worship with you.
