Our Sins Are Many

Psalm 40:12

For troubles surround me—too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage. NLT

Sunday in the message about forgiveness we talked about our sins and how God forgives our sin. Each of us has sin galore. Our sin has mounted up and it hems us in on all sides at times. Today’s passage – from the New Living Translation (NLT) says – For troubles surround me—too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage.

Our sins are so plentiful – and left alone – they would keep us from heaven and send us to hell. But – even though our sins are more than the hairs on our head – Jesus died on the cross to provide grace – forgiveness.

The Psalmist says he has lost all courage because of the number of sins in his life. I agree that our sins can be overwhelming – they can block our view of God at times. I urge us to keep a short list of sins – or in another way of saying it – I would say we should come before God confessing our sins on a regular basis so our list of sins stays short. We need to confess and repent – turn away from sin and turn to God each and every day.

Here’s today’s passage in partial context. Psalm 40:5–13 – O Lord my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them. You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand— you don’t require burnt offerings or sin offerings. 7 Then I said, “Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures: 8 I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.” 9 I have told all your people about your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as you, O Lord, well know. 10 I have not kept the good news of your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness. 11 Lord, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me. 12 For troubles surround me— too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage. 13 Please, Lord, rescue me! Come quickly, Lord, and help me.

Lord – help us to turn from sin and turn to You. Help us to walk with You in our daily walk – in such a way that our list of unforgiven sins stays small. May we come to You often and confess and repent and seek Your grace and forgiveness. Remember – it is not how we feel or what we think sin is or isn’t. Sin is defined by God in His Holy Word. Our feelings and experiences are so minor in the process.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
