Salt and Light

Matthew 5:13

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

I’m not much of a cook (believe me). I can cook a few things. Mostly I use the microwave for my stuff. With my limited knowledge of cooking – I do know that a little salt is all you need to add flavor to a stew or soup or most any dish. A pinch here and there will do the trick (except with French fries). A little salt helps most things (although I only use it on certain foods.

I know salt has gotten a bad reputation when used too often. It has been linked to high blood pressure for some. I remember they use to give us salt pills in the summer during Football practice in High School to replace the salt we lost working out in the heat – so some salt it needed for sure (although I think that practice has stopped).

In today’s passage we are reminded that as Christians – we are to flavor the world around us. We are to let our witness touch the lives of those around us to allow for the presence of Jesus to help to flavor their lives with His love.

Here’s today’s passage in partial context. Matthew 5:13–16 – 13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

So how are we doing folks? Are we the salt and the light of the world? Are we flavoring the world around us? Do we light up the darkness around us? Is Jesus seen in us – thru us – and in spite of us?

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
