Encourage Others!

Hebrews 10:25

Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another — and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Let me begin by thanking God for my wife and oldest daughter. My wife for supporting me through 38 plus years and to my daughter – Shelly – for coaching me as I strive to become healthy again. I have lost 61 pounds so far and 35 of them have been lost the last three months under a new health plan that my daughter encouraged me to try. I will say more about this later. I am going to become a health coach – and it fits here – as we talk about encouraging others.

I think it is essential that we encourage one another. I’m sure I wouldn’t have lost all the weight I have – I’m sure I wouldn’t feel the healthiest I have felt in a decade – had it not be for others encouraging me. I also receive encouragement from the guys I play basketball with early in the morning. I know – often – they are merely putting up with me – often being the oldest guy out there. My shot isn’t what it use to be – occasionally I will get on a roll and hit a few threes but mostly they simply encourage me to get out there and exercise and play with them. I’m thankful.

I think it is essential that we encourage one another – not only physically but most assuredly – spiritually. The Bible tells us in today’s passage in Hebrews 10:25Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another — and all the more as you see the Day approaching.  I think the day is fast approaching – Christ’s return is near – and we need to be in the daily business of encouraging one another. Let’s try and see how we are blessed.

It is so easy to be critical. Tearing down doesn’t build up the Body of Christ. We do not ignore that which needs attention or correction but we do so in love and as much as possible through encouragement. We can correct and even rebuke as Scripture says through love. But often we fail to praise and encourage. It is easy to see and report and have an opinion about what we dislike. How about what we see going well?

Hebrews 3:13 says – encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. We cannot let ourselves get stuck in the past or in discouragement. We need to move forward with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit. Discouragement and a critical spirit are not works of God but rather they are sin and the work of Satan. I pray that we can be a people of joy and love and encouragement – even in our correcting.

Encourage someone today! I have recently challenged myself to be more encouraging of the volunteers that work in the various ministries of our church. We can all model this approach and bless someone with an encouragement. I also try to encourage those around me.

I will begin by saying – the worshipping body at First Church has been a great encouragement to my wife and I. We feel the Spirit in both services and seek with you to present ourselves to God!  As the days unfold before us – let us seek His face and desire His grace together.

I also want to acknowledge our music ministry at both services.  The choir – led by Judy and Jeanette – do a wonderful job – and the church family appreciates their leadership in worship. Some of the anthems they have presented have been so powerful – we could give a benediction and go home – having heard the very voice of God speak to us! The 11 am service is now being led musically by liturgists and keyboardists. Thanks to those who help lead the singing and the music – thanks to Rosaly – Judy – Jeanette – and Nancy for helping with the music. Thanks to those who help at both services as liturgists. Together they are creating a worshipful atmosphere at both services and are using their gifts in a variety of ways. It is uplifting to see both of these services with such powerful music ministries and we at First Church are so blessed.

How about encouraging someone today! Give encouragement – even more readily than we do criticism. It might just change the way we feel – and the way others feel!

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way!
