November Prayer/Fast Is Coming Soon

Zechariah 7:4-5

Then the word of the Lord Almighty came to me: “Ask all the people of the land and the priests, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months for the past seventy years, was it really for me that you fasted?

fullsizeoutput_ffeSo – here is a question for us today – as we prepare for our November Prayer/Fast. Do we pray and fast – regularly? I mean – is it an essential part of our spiritual walk as we strive to draw closer to God? The answer to that question might go a long way in explaining if we are growing spiritually or not. I believe that prayer and fasting are essential spiritual disciplines.

I am calling the church to a time of prayer and fasting from November 1st thru the end of the month. I know that is a long time – but it will be very rewarding – if we seek His face and desire His grace. Let’s use the month of November to deny ourselves of something – and focus more on Jesus.

When we fast from something – we should spend extra time with God. Spending extra time with God – will draw us closer to Him. Here is something important to understand. Read well! When we fast from certain foods and expect something – like weight loss – is fasting for us or for God? Losing weight is OK – but it shouldn’t be the reason we fast. As we call for a time of prayer and fasting during November – what would we fast from and how would we spend our time? It should be to draw closer to God.

During the November Prayer/Fast – I’m planning to fast from all political comments on Social Media. That won’t be easy – because the mid-term elections are at the start of November and surely there will be comments made after the election that will require my knowledge and experience (LOL). What I will encourage people to do – without debate or partisan comments – will be to get out and vote!

I will also try to use Social Media only as a teaching tool – a time to encourage others – during November. Maybe this will give me a fresh start with Social Media and I can use it moving forward as a way of praising God rather than debating issues with people.

So – what will you fast from in November? I mentioned Social Media for me – but there will be other things. I’m still praying about it. I’ve already given up so much food wise as I lose weight (35 pounds in three months). What will you fast from in November? Think and pray about it!

As I fast from certain items – I will also spend more time with Jesus. I will spend more time in prayer and more time in God’s Word. The writer today wrote: “Ask all the people of the land and the priests, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months for the past seventy years, was it really for me that you fasted? In other words – were they expecting something out of this spiritual act or were they merely trying to draw closer to God? Think about it! We need to ask ourselves this same question. My hope is that we will all be drawn closer to God – even if there are other positive things that happen!

Daniel 9:3 – So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes. During the Prayer/Fast – I pray we spend more time in prayer – and more time with God. Set aside time each day – spend it with God.

I will report here how I’m doing. I would love to hear how we all are doing. I will continue to pray for us all as we walk through these days of our prayer/fast. I pray God’s Spirit – the Holy Spirit – will speak to our spirits.

If anyone wishes to join me – I will find a reading plan on www.youversion.com. Join me or try your own reading plan.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.

  1. good
political comments only irritate too many people
even neutral ones are used as an excuse to be offended
neutral ones should be seen as just that
we need to pray for our country each day, and for members of all parties
