Your View of Marriage Is Important

Genesis 2:18

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

fullsizeoutput_ffeWhat are your views on marriage? If you were asked about your views – what would you be prepared to say? Our denomination is dealing with this right now as we process how we understand Scripture. The debate is not really about marriage – although that is one of the presenting issues. The discussion or debate is about the authority of Scripture and how we interpret God’s Word. Today’s devotional thought is about marriage – what are our views?

In this day and age when people are living together before or without marriage in alarming numbers – divorcing at an ever-increasing rate – when debates rage concerning who may get married (same-sex partners) – what are our view on marriage? It is important to know where we stand on issues of importance like marriage – the cornerstone of our society. We need marriage as a foundation of our culture. The family is a main stronghold. Think about it!

A great place to start the discussion on marriage would be the Word of God – the Bible. What does God tell us – thru His Holy Word – about marriage? Here are a few passages.

Genesis 2:18The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

Genesis 2:23-24The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

2 Corinthians 6:14Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

Matthew 19:4-6Haven’t you read” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

This summer marked our 38th anniversary. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner for life. My wife is a real gem and the fact that she has been able to put up with me over these years is nothing short of a miracle (believe me). I pray for our marriage and other marriages often.

What are your views about marriage? Have they changed with the times? Are your views in line with the Bible – with God’s Word – or – are your views in line with the society where we live? Our own denomination has been debating marriage – in ways – for over four decades now. The debate over who can get married in our denomination may eventually split our denomination. What are your views? This subject may come to a head at a specially called General Conference in 2019 (February 23-26). Keep praying for the United Methodist Church to hold to Biblical standards.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
