Halloween – Celebrate or Not?

Revelation 21:8

But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

fullsizeoutput_ffeThe secular holiday called Halloween is coming. Even this week there are Trunk or Treat events going on. The church is trying to allow for creative juices to flow and fun to be had (along with candy) without succumbing to the world’s understanding of this holiday. I would like to debate the holiday called Halloween.

I understand All-Hallows Eve and its history – Ireland – Scotland – Wales – and other traditions. We will remember All-Saints Day in two Sundays by remembering those who had passed since last November.

I understand that most people simply see Halloween as a holiday to dress up and collect candy – so what is the fuss one might ask. Because we don’t understand the true nature of something – do we simply make own plans?

I also understand the religious holiday it represents – it is a Druid holiday (Satanic worship – witchcraft).

Why would a Christian family allow for their children – or for themselves even – to dress like demons – devils – witches – etc.? Here are a few passages that speaks to this subject.

Galatians 5:19–21 – 19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Deuteronomy 18:10–14 – 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you. 13 You must be blameless before the Lord your God. 14 The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the Lord your God has not permitted you to do so.

Isaiah 8:19 – When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?

Is Halloween no big deal or have the people of God allowed the influence of Satan to darken their understanding? Is it a non-issue? Should it be? Should it not be?

Some in the church wouldn’t allow their children to read or view the Harry Potter series because it had witchcraft and sorcery in it. Is there such a thing as a good witch (Wizard of Oz). Is it OK to scare our children? What about watching horror movies?

Debate on!

Something for us to think about today as we go on our way!
