It’s NEVER Too Late

Philippians 1:9

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,

Life ChangeIf you’re a parent – you probably had or have dreams for your children. I know I had and have dreams for our three girls. Dreams about their physical – emotional and spiritual growth. Dreams about their athletic abilities – and their maturity – and about their walk with Jesus. They have surpassed most of my dreams for sure. They are amazing young women (young is always a relative term). Their mother and I are very blessed by them. The men in their lives are also a blessing. Our five granddaughters are a new generation to pray over and invest in for sure. It is NEVER too late to take corrective action though – if our dreams and prayers have not been met.

If you’ve had or have dreams for your life – you probably have succeeded in some areas and fallen short in some areas. As I look back at my life – there are things I would do differently – of course – but – overall – I’m pleased with my life. I may not have reached all of my goals – but the ones that are most important – my walk with Jesus and my family – are a blessing. I wish I could lose another 50 pounds. I wish I could still dunk a basketball (yet I can still light it up from the 3-point arc). I wish my ministry had reached more people for Jesus. I wish I had spent more time with my family – and less time working. I wish I hadn’t spent so much money on cars as a teen and young adult. OK – the list could go on and on – but – most of my dreams have come true and some are still in reach. It is NEVER too late to take corrective action though – if our dreams and prayers have not been met.

If you were given a few weeks or months to live – what would you do? What would you change? How would your life be different for the days – weeks – months you had left? Who would you talk with about things that should have been talked about a long time ago? Who would you make the time to see? What would be fresh on your mind? What would you focus on with every waking hour? Would you even sleep much – wanting to spend as much time doing things? It is NEVER too late to take corrective action though – if our dreams and prayers have not been met.

We should live each day as if it is our last – because we never know when our last day is at hand. We should leave nothing unsaid or undone. I tell folks at funerals – we should never wait till tomorrow to tell someone we love them – because tomorrow may never come. It is NEVER too late to take corrective action though – if our dreams and prayers have not been met.

Jesus knew His time was near – that His death was at hand. Sunday I will preach a sermon as we walk toward the cross together – about what was on Jesus’ mind – as He approached His death. Paul writes in today’s passage about what might have been on his mind: Philippians 1:9 – And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,

Paul’s heart for the believers that were his children – so to speak – was that they would grow in their knowledge and understand of Jesus. It was his prayer for the believers. Here’s today’s passage in partial context. Philippians 1:3–11 – 3 I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. 7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.

What are your dreams and prayers for your life and for the lives of those you love? It is NEVER too late to make changes – to make corrective actions. Let’s focus on Paul’s prayer – to let our love abound and our knowledge grow!

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
