Satan Is Real – Rebuke The Devil!

1 Peter 5:8

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

Life ChangeI’m shocked by the number of pastors who do not believe in the devil – Satan. Some simply do not believe in an entity known as Satan – the devil – or Lucifer – a fallen angel. As many times as the Bible tells us about Satan – it is hard to believe some do not believe. I would label these as false teachers – and we should rebuke them as we rebuke Satan.

In today’s passage – Peter reminds us that the devil – our enemy – prowls around like a wild beast – looking for an opportunity to devour us – to destroy us. 1 Peter 5:8 – Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Are we to somehow believe that Peter didn’t realize that the devil is not real? Do we believe that Peter was simply using a metaphor when he wrote about the devil?

Maybe Jesus didn’t understand when John quotes Him – as He was speaking with Jewish persons who didn’t agree with His teachings. John 8:42–44 –42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Maybe – in Matthew’s gospel – Jesus was mistaken again when He spoke about the sheep and goats – the followers of God and those who reject God – those who do the Master’s work and those who do not. Matthew 25:40–41 – 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ 41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Maybe – Jesus’ brother James was mistaken as well – when he warned us against the devil and how to make the devil flee from us. James 4:7–10 – 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.

Even later in his ministry – John didn’t seem to understand – as God revealed to him that the devil – the beast – was a fallen angel and swept a third of the angels from heaven as well. Revelation 12:4 – Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born.

Of course – Paul was mistaken as well. He believed that Satan would be crushed under Jesus’ feet in the final victory. Romans 16:17–20 – 17 I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. 18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. 19 Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I rejoice because of you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil. 20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.

All of these – John – Matthew – Jesus – James and Paul – not to mention all the Old Testament passages – must be mistaken – according to false teachers who do not believe in Satan (and of course – they don’t believe in hell either). We are warned in the Bible of false teachers. We are to stay away from them – to reject their false teachings. To rebuke them as we rebuke Satan.

Satan is real! The devil – a fallen angel – is out to devour us – to take away our joy – to steal – if even possible – our salvation and relationship with Jesus. Yet – we are given victory over Satan – by the blood of Jesus our Lord. We can resist and even defeat the devil and all of the devil’s temptations. 1 Corinthians 10:12–13 – 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

The devil is real – prowling around like a lion ready to devour us – but we have victory through Jesus. We can make the devil flee. We can overcome the devil’s temptations because God is faithful. God will crush the devil under His feet. We need to fear – just realize Satan is real and rebuke him at every turn in our life.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
